With former Red Sox leftfielder Mike Greenwell speaking up the other day about his decision not to take steroids as a player and his previous comments about deserving to be given the award now that Jose Canseco has admitted steroid use, here are a few reasons why his wish should be granted.
1. In 1988, Greenwell hit .325 with 22 homers 119 RBI and 16 SB while making only $205,000 and playing steroid free for a team that went 89-73, won their division, but got swept in the ALCS (ironically by Canseco’s A’s).
2. He had the balls to call Jose Canseco out for being juiced up and undeserving of the award. Without steroids, Canseco would have been just another mulleted douchebag throwing sawdust over throwup at his old elementary school. Amazingly, he likely still would have been more successful than his twin brother Ozzie.
2. He earned the nickname “Gator” because he supposedly wrestled alligators in the offseason down in Florida.
3. He raced in NASCAR for Green Light Racing in 2006
4. He was ejected twice in 1999 as coach of a 9 and 10-year old all-star team for distributing verbal beatdowns to volunteer umpires.
5. He owns a sweet amusement park down in Florida featuring go-karts, paintball, batting cages, and mini golf.
